Ages 9–17 · 8-week term program

Built off the ice.Proven on it.

Ice time in Brisbane is scarce and hard to get. Primal Ice Hockey gives young players another way to lift their game: a weekly strength and conditioning hour, shooting lane practice, and on-ice coaching from a former NHL player.

What it is

More hockey, without waiting for ice.

In Brisbane, ice time is at a premium and difficult to get. So we've built a program that keeps young players improving between their ice sessions.

It starts off the ice, with a weekly strength and conditioning hour built on the high-performance program of Chris Miller, founder of PrimalThenics. Chris has coached 30 Olympic and Commonwealth Games athletes and a number of professional sporting teams across Australia.

Players keep their hands sharp in our shooting lanes at Newmarket Pool, then take it onto the ice with former NHL player Scott Timmins, our Head Coach, Ice Hockey.

What Term 4 looks like

Three parts, one term.

Term fees stay the same, but we've changed how the term is structured. Instead of a weekly coached puck-skills hour, we've put that energy into bringing Scott Timmins to Brisbane for on-ice intensives towards the end of term.

Every week

Strength & conditioning hour

Every session is a one-hour S&C session led through Chris Miller's high-performance program. It's the foundation that builds speed, power, balance and durability.

After your session

Shooting lanes

An additional 20-minute slot each week to shoot pucks and keep skills alive before the intensives.

12–14 November

On-ice with Scott

Concentrated, high-level coaching on the ice from a former NHL player, at the Ice Barn in Cannon Hill. Included in your Term 4 fees.

Shooting lanes

Keep their hands sharp.

Each week there's an additional 20-minute slot after strength and conditioning for your child to shoot pucks in our shooting lanes at Newmarket Pool.

It keeps their skills alive in the lead-up to the intensives, so they arrive ready to get the most out of their time on the ice with Scott.

This is not our Newmarket studio. Please head straight to the rink.

Players are placed in groups of 10, based on age and ability. Each group does two sessions with Scott, and each session is 1 hour on the ice with Scott plus 1 hour of off-ice fitness at the rink.

  • Dates: across Thursday 12, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 November
  • Venue: Ice Barn, Cannon Hill. Both the on-ice hour and the off-ice fitness hour happen at the rink
  • Cost: included in your Term 4 fees
  • Session times: allocated once Term 4 bookings are finalised. We'll give you as much notice as possible so you can plan around your family's timetable
  • What to bring: full protective equipment, skates, stick, helmet with cage, water bottle, and gym gear for the off-ice session

Exclusive to PrimalThenics

Scott isn't running any other workshops while he's in Brisbane. His sessions are only open to Primal Ice Hockey players.

Where it can lead

The pathway into our Next Gen teams.

Primal Ice Hockey is how players are considered for our teams at the Next Gen Showcase. Term 4 attendance strengthens a player's selection case, and at least one session a week in Term 1 2027 is required for selection.

FAQ

Questions parents ask.

Who can join?

Primal Ice Hockey is open to any player aged 9–17 who is currently playing ice hockey.

Is Primal Ice Hockey on the ice?

The weekly strength and conditioning sessions are off-ice, at our Newmarket studio, and the weekly shooting slot is in our shooting lanes at Newmarket Pool. On-ice coaching comes through the Scott Timmins intensives at the Ice Barn, Cannon Hill, from 12 to 14 November.

Where are the on-ice sessions with Scott?

At the Ice Barn, Shop 2/1177 Wynnum Rd, Cannon Hill QLD 4170, from Thursday 12 to Saturday 14 November. Your player's group does both its on-ice hour and its off-ice fitness hour there, so there's no need to come to Newmarket first.

Do I have to join to be considered for Next Gen 2027?

Yes. Primal Ice Hockey is the selection pathway. Term 4 attendance strengthens your player's case, and attending at least one session per week in Term 1 2027 is required for selection. See the Next Gen 2027 page for the full criteria.

Does joining guarantee a Next Gen team spot?

No. Teams are selected against published criteria, including commitment to the on- and off-ice program, skating competency, and behaviour and character. You don't have to be aiming for Next Gen to join Primal Ice Hockey.

My child is younger than 9. Is there anything for them?

Take a look at Primal Juniors and our school holiday program, which build the athletic foundation every sport relies on.
